Military police arrest man at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport AMSTERDAM — Military police arrested a man and were conducting an investigation at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport late Tuesday after a report of a "suspicious situation." Dozens of heavily armed military police, many wearing ski masks, were guarding the area. Some passengers were unable to get to their parked cars because of the operation and were left standing outside. Explosives experts were called to the scene as a precaution and were checking the arrested man's luggage, military police spokesman Alfred Ellwanger told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said that if the explosives didn't find anything the heavy security measures at the airport would be scaled back. Earlier, Ellwanger said the man was arrested at the airport's bus station and an operation was ongoing there to search the area, which is outside the airport's main terminal. Ellwanger gave no details on why exactly the man was arrested or his identity. He said the arrest followed "a report of a suspicious situation," but didn't elaborate. Asked if the situation involved a threat to the airport, Ellwanger said, "it's too early to say." Television images later showed two other men being detained, but Ellwanger said "as far as I know, that has nothing to do with" the suspicious situation. Schiphol spokeswoman Danielle Timmer said that flights to and from the airport were not believed to be affected. Trains also were still running to and from the airport. The Netherlands has been on high alert since the attacks on Brussels airport and subway last month in neighboring Belgium. Copyright 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
