It's Friday which means it's time for TJ's Quicktip! Each week I will show you a tip or trick within Mac OS X or iOS, this week I show you a few tips relating to the keyboard in iOS. The first tip is specific to the iPad and allows you to move and split the keyboard. If you hold your finger on the lower left icon, that normally hides the keyboard, you should see two options that allow you to Undock and Split the keyboard. If you tap Undock the keyboard will detach from the bottom of the screen and will move higher up the screen. You can position the keyboard wherever you feel comfortable with by holding on the hide keyboard icon and moving up and down the screen. If you choose the Split option this will pull the keyboard apart so that you have easy access to it from either side of the screen. This is useful if you have difficulty reaching the middle keys if you use the keyboard whilst holding your iPad. To Merge the keyboard back together and return it to the Dock position simply hold on the hide keyboard icon and select Dock &Merge. The option to split the keyboard is also achievable by place two fingers or thumbs in the centre of the keyboard and pulling them apart. You can also merge the keyboard by dragging the two halves of the keyboard back together. The second tip is keyboard shortcuts. By holding down on certain keys you can access a few extra characters or features. if you hold down on certain letters, mainly vowels, you'll notice different variations of that character appear for you to select. This is useful if you are typing in another language. Similarly if you hold down on the .com key when web browsing you'll be presented with a few different domain endings to choose from.
